where have all the babysitters gone?
Growing up I was a babysitter, and in constant competition...There were always 10 other girls who wanted to babysit for cheaper or whatever, I had to compete for jobs. Of course this led me to beleive that having kids was not the end of one's life, that it could in fact continue, on a nightly basis if one so wished. What the hell was that? It must have been that I was really on a major crack/heroin binge and having hallucinations that people cared about those beaten down, deprived, suicidal people we call mothers. Because now I have my own "little angels", and cannot manage to find a single friggin babysitter, except my mother-in-law, who contrary to the laws of nature has shunned the blue-haired, cookie-baking, full-time grandchild babysitting that was supposed to be her destiny in favor of an actual adult life. What is this world coming to?? So anyways, she only babysits periodically. The problem, of course, is economics, and where we live. Teenagers are supposed to be desperate for spending money and willing to spend their evenings with a few "angels" to get some. Here, however, in suburbian heaven, the teenagers are desperate for NOTHING. Not money, cars, designer couture or drugs. Babysitting has been rendered unnecessary by daddy's wallet and mommies inability to stay sober long enough to care. Welcome to the OC. Maybe I will stand outside the highschool with a sign. One of them has to want money.
